Henry Engelhard Steinway February 15, 1797-February 7, 1871
Born in 1797 in Braunschweig, Germany, as the 16th son, he was named Heinrich Engelhard Steinwek at the time. His father and brothers were recruited during the Napoleonic Wars that broke out at the time, during which starvation killed his mother and children, leaving only three, including Heinrich, when his father returned. At the age of 15, he unfortunately lost his entire family to a fire caused by a lightning strike, and Heinrich became an orphan and later worked as a furniture craftsman. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, he began working in an organ factory using woodworking techniques, then became independent and had his own organ repair workshop. During his organ production and repair work, he became keenly interested in fortepiano and began making pianos thereafter. In 1836, his first Steinway piano was completed. The revolution in 1842 made it difficult to work on piano, and in 1850 he moved to New York City, USA.
In the 1820s, Heinrich Engelhard Steinwek, who was a furniture maker in Germany, made the first piano. Heinrich emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1850 with his wife and eight of his nine children. Heinrich Steinway renamed Henry Steinway in English when he emigrated to the United States and founded Steinway and Sons in New York City in 1853. In the 1860s, a new factory was set up on Park Avenue in Manhattan, increasing annual production from 500 to 1800. After the 20th century, it suffered from poor management, and after being acquired by CBS in 1972 and then sold to multiple individual investors, it became a subsidiary of Selmer Industries in 1995. Together with Selmer and its former United Musical Instruments, LeBlanc Group and others, it continues to be the Steinway Musical Instruments, a complex of musical instrument manufacturers.
